The disclaimer first: on most of our travels I manage most of the time to write a blog daily. I failed on this trip. We were so busy with the family, grandchildren and friends that I just could not keep up. I decided that living the moment was more important than writing about it. The result of course is that I will forget a lot of the great thoughts. All I can do now is try.
Sunday June 30
Buying tickets in advance can be very important but it is also very difficult because many things play an important role like the weather. We had decided on this day at 9:15 am and it promised to be a very nice day.
Our accommodation has a kitchen but a lot is missing and making coffee or a breakfast would not be easy. Besides, we haven't found a supermarket yet. Nothing seemed to be open on Sunday morning yet either but finally we found a place. It was a lovely place but nobody was in a hurry to serve us. It was pricy and when we finally got food we had to eat it in a hurry. A bit of the shame.
We hurried to the other side of the river and luckily knew where to go.
The bus and guide was already there. We showed our tickets and all was well.
This had been Helen's dream. When planning the trip she said that she regretted not visiting Salzburg when she was a student in Vienna. But at that time she had not watched the movie every New Year's yet. This tour was going to take us to the places were scenes were filmed. I am not going to explain the photos!
Our tour guide was great. She could not have been better. She was spanky and funny and full of life.
She obviously loved her job and even made us sing the songs when the bus was going from A to B etc.
At one stop the busdriver offered drinks we could buy. This is a very Austrian soft drink. Helen of course wanted to try it.
The wedding scene in the movie was filmed at the basilica in Mondsee. It took about half an hour to go there but we happen to stop right in front of our bank which was convenient to finally get cash.
The children's corner in the basilica.
Our guide had told us beforehand that there is an ice cream place where one of the tastes is "Apfelstrudel". Oh gosh, was it good!
The tour ended more than 4 hours later in the Mirabell Garden.
We went to the gnom garden. Helen wanted to take a certain photo.
Then we made our way home. It was the hottest time of the day.
... it's not good to keep things bottled up! Yeah!
After recovering/refreshing in the room a little we went looking for dinner. Of course we always looked for something Austrian. I had this but I can't remember what it was called. I only remember that the menu mentioned horseradish. I also remember that I didn't realize the the horseradish was shredded and on top. When I took a good bite the sensation of the horseradish in my mouth seemed to go all the way to my brain. Lesson learned. All other bites where delishes.
Monday July 1
We packed up, left the apartment as we were supposed to and also had to leave some taxes in cash.
Helen wanted me to take a photo of the strange tiles with the strange the face before we left the place.
And then we left Salzburg. It had been a really nice experience!
