On our way, arriving in Budapest Hungary

Tuesday May 28

Yes,  today is the day. We wake up and spend the morning packing and arranging. I have the feeling I might have forgotten something but hope it is not something vital. Ha-ha, Maren will be surprised. This parcel was sent to her before Christmas but the post office decided to not deliver it but bring it all the way back. I decided to put it into the suitcase.

I also have a great big fat envelope in the suitcase with the quilted Cotton Robin (see the "my lace and quilt blog" tab on top - blog coming in July) which happens to go to England. Kate (the recipient) decided it was safer to be past the deadline but not mail it over the ocean. This year things kept getting lost (took their time) but luckily did show up at the end.

Our neighbor and friend Jack called in the morning and insisted that they would be at our house at 1:30 pm to bring us to the airport. We have the best friends. We laughed all the way.

Check in, security, everything went well but at the gate after a while when they just had announced that they would start boarding we got the bad news that our plane had a problem and was going to the hanger to be repaired. The new time would surely make us miss our connection. We were re-routed. Instead of Philadelphia we were going to Charlotte. But that plane was a little later too so right next to that gate was a place for some libation. Goodness gracious, was that Bloody Mary spicy. And so was the bill.

Finally. I had a great view onto the city of Richmond with all those bridges over the James River and the rapids. Unfortunately it was not photogenic.

We had quite a long lay-over in Charlotte so were able to go into the Admirals Club. Ha-ha, no bill here. The Parmesan Kale Soup with Italian Sausage was just right for me. Plenty of other snacks and complimentary red wine and Wi-Fi.

If you have to kill time it's easier to do when it is in a nicer place. We could talk with Helen and take care of some emails etc.

Finally. The long flight to London Heathrow. When James had booked the flights last fall he got an incredible good special offer for business class. Only a bit more than regular. Ha, we didn't have to think about that twice. And oh, was it nice.

Not your typical airline food. Crisp veggies and incredibly tender and juicy meat. Oh well ...

Passionfruit Cheesecake. Do I need to say more. Most of the time desserts are not really worth the calories but this ...

It was a night flight of course. James didn't have any complaints. Comforter and all.

Even I slept. And here is breakfast. You had a choice of fruit platter or quiche Lorraine. I chose the fruit platter and it came with granola and yoghurt. And a good cuppa (tea).

We landed at Terminal 3 and had to hurry. Heathrow is huge. Since the next flight was a British Airline one James knew we had to go to Terminal 5. You have to take a bus and it is quite a way. When we were there we saw on the big board that there was a Terminal change. Really? Terminal 3. O.k., waiting for the bus again, driving over and then walking, walking to the gate. Did I say that Heathrow is huge? We just made it though. Our tickets said we were boarding group 1 but the gate lady saw my cane (which I had taken with me just in case) and "insisted" for us to go ahead with a group of Zimmer frames etc. I felt really funny about that. Were these people flying to a "Marigold hotel" situation?

I would have had a nice view taking off over Windsor but ...

Saw a load of British Aways planes at Terminal 5 though.

The seats were incredibly close together. The only difference between regular and business class was that the third seat in the middle was blocked with a tray so you felt that you had a wider seat. But standing up was a chore.

The meal was nice though. We even got menus and were asked to choose. I had British roast chicken supreme, sweetcorn mash, kale, green beans.

Finally we arrive in Budapest. Several hours later then original scheduled. Our tour-guide Monica had contacted us by email a few days ago and gave us advice how to get to our hotel. We went to the shuttle place (miniBUD) and booked it. 5,936 Hungarian Forint (HUF) which is about $26. She told us to expect to wait 15 to 20 minutes. Not bad (so we thought).

There were some metal benches and monitors were we would see when our ticket number would show up with the minibus number. Except ...

... an hour later we were quite upset. No minivan had shown up for us yet even though we kind of had inquired several times and promises were made.

Finally it came. Of course there were already other people in it but we knew that's how it is. We had nice chats and were the second stop to be dropped off, just when it had started to rain.

We checked in.
Our hotel Clark Budapest (Clark Ádám tér 1., 01. Budavár, Budapest, 1013, Hungary) is very nice and in a great location.

We got settled, showered etc and decided we did need to go out of the room for just a little while. It was already 8 pm but too early to go to sleep. And a little snack would be nice too. The hotel bar/restaurant downstairs looked very nice but there was no table available. So we got the Restaurant ZONA "across the street" recommended and James got our raincoats from the room.

Well, I am not sure what "across the street" means in Hungary but we did find it and didn't even get badly wet. We ended up really liking that place. The food was outstanding. I had the Mangalica goulash and James the Veal tenderloin which we were told was made the Hungarian way. Yes, outstanding. Especially with a glass of Konyári Jánosbeg yì kékfrankos!

Ha-ha, taking a photo of James taking a photo. He is doing it now too. Oh my...
My goulash was not what I had expected. We are still joking about "the brick" but as I said, it was so delicious. And not "bricky" at all.

And the place had atmosphere. Look at all those bottle bottoms.

It dribbled just a little bit and it wasn't far to walk back. But here is a bridge over the Danube.

A tunnel (?)

Our hotel.

The intersection / bridge from the hotel door.

Time to turn the light off. We can hear the rain falling outside.

A week and a half

... is not enough time to get ready for a long trip. Sigh. Friday May 17 we drove back to Virginia. Of course when you arrive after being gone for a while you inspect everything. The amaryllis inside the house looked a little rough but after cleaning up the dead/done flowers not so bad. Surprise, one of the baby-bulbs (volunteers) even made a flower which has never happened to me.

Is the dragonfly sunning itself on the bird feeder?

I had a long list of things needing to be done before we leave on our Europe trip. One was finishing my newest Chrismon design. I mailed a big stuffed envelope with one and pattern and some beads to John who makes all the Chrismons for Grace Episcopal in Paducah, our former church. I think he was pleased. This must be the earliest I had a pattern for him ... Christmas 2020?

Friday night we came back late on foot from friends in the neighborhood and look who was waiting just outside the front door? James looked it up. He thinks it is an Eastern Garter Snake and a good one to have in the yard.

Another friend in the neighborhood had a birthday and the family had come in for the weekend. I baked and cut one of the amaryllis stalks and some green in the garden. So much beauty.

Yeah, it's the Pflaumenkuchen (plum cake) again. Helen wanted the recipe. Her German class students had asked for it. Here is the RECIPE!  It's a bit sweet. I probably would reduce the sugar.
You serve it with whipped cream on top. Yummy!

Saturday (5-25) we were invited to Sarah and family for dinner. When we arrive the boys were having fun with bubbles. Pizza on the screened patio. Great evening.

We took Caleb with us for the night. He loves to go to church with us on Sunday morning. After lunch we walked around Echo Lake to see the turtles from the bridge and had a treat at Sweet Frog. James took him home so I could work on the church newsletter. It had to be done earlier than usual and mailed (email) Monday evening. I always feel like celebrating when that is done.

Monday morning early we decided to go for a walk in the neighborhood. Progress had been made with all that needed to be done and a warm breeze was making the walk very enjoyable. I had just talked with Caleb about birds sometimes making nests underneath the mailboxes and one flew out just when I passed these. It barely missed running (eh, flying) into me.

There is a nest in it. I tried to take a photo but I didn’t really want to go too close to make the bird afraid. I am sure it watched me from somewhere.

These boxes are for things like newspapers or notes from neighbors which did not come through the postoffice. Only the postman is allowed to use the mailbox. Otherwise it’s against the law.

Ever since William could read I have written letters to him, mailed with "real" post.  I had bought for several (?) years the yearly brochure with all the issued new stamps of that year starting in 1975. Some time ago I had found these old stamps and decided that it was real money just laying around and used them as postage to William. He gets the brochures where he can save the canceled stamps. Each also has an explanation about the design and the object etc. I hope he has fun with it.

Since we are gone for 5 weeks I decided to "pre-write" letters with the date when it would be mailed and asked a friend to put them on the appropriate time into the mailbox. Of course Irma was only too happy to do that since she thought it was a great idea. Included is even a letter to the camp in NC he is going to for a whole week. His first time. I so hope he will love it.

Almost last minute chore: cut this unruly bush down so I can put the amaryllis pots in a place where the sprinkler might take care of them. It worked last year. You have seen the recent blooms?

Yup, and that is it for now. Depending on the availability of internet you might be able to read about what we are doing .... if you want to?

We are excited and hoping for safe travels.

Somebody is turning 9

Yup. Going to be 9. Our first (which makes hime the oldest) grandson. Have to be in Nashville of course. We drove all day Friday so we had some time with him after school. And then it's weekend. Have to use every minute.

That Friday was his Field Day at school though. We missed that. But Ben shared several videos and photos with us. Great big THANK YOU!
I made one VIDEO   (1:48) out of them. We were so impressed with how fast he has become since last year. Ben said that William's team did very well. And at the end everybody got really muddy. That must have been fun for William too.

Worth traveling for 10 hours when you get a hug like that when you arrive!!!!!

Saturday, Helen's friend Susanne came for brunch. We like her too and it's her birthday this day. William decided we should make a special dessert. Gummy worms in dirt. He and Papa get busy.

William is serving Susanne her birthday dessert ... with a candle.

William loves to read. He found this and showed it to me.

Mother's Day at Helen's church. Special music this Sunday!  VIDEO!   (1:35)
I think it is very lovely and enjoyable.

All seems to be already prepared in the Sunday school rooms for VBS. William loves Sunday school. Today he had to bring 9 pennies since he is going to have a birthday on Tuesday.

Drifter is taking the boys for a walk.

White stuff was flying around like snow. Seeds from something.

To the golf course and back.

Monday evening. After William went to bed it's time to do some preparations for the next morning. Mommy blows up 25 regular balloons. And 5 glow-in-the-dark balloons too.

We got 8 floating balloons which where tied to his breakfast spoon, toothbrush, on each shoe, backpack etc. Happy birthday banners on the bathroom mirror and over the table.

Drifter didn't like that the balloons were all over William's bedroom floor. But William had fun when he woke up on his birthday.

He wanted the same birthday cookie as last year ... a bonfire cake. Helen delivered.

The cousins wanted to FaceTime but William was in school and later the timing didn't work out.
So, they sent a VIDEO!    (0:34) The cousins love each other which makes the grandparents happy.

On Wednesday he took 2 dozen cupcakes to school for his class mates (and teachers). Helen wrote on Facebook: "Chocolate Enderman and Vanilla Creepers invaded 3rd grade lunch!" The comment was: "Mindcraft". Omi and Papa don't have a clue.

And yes, birthday decorations still around days later!

Thursday was a very busy day. I had volunteered to bake a "Pflaumenkuchen" for Helen's German class (she is teaching right now) in the evening. Thanks to google I found a good recipe. A very German one. Well, this is not the season for the right Pflaumen (Zwetschgen) and I had to use two foil pans instead of the proper "Blech" but it turned out pretty well. And it fit right into the lesson for the day.

At the end of her class she texted this photo to me. I will do this again for sure because we liked it too. I will share the recipe then.

James and I picked William up from his school at 3 pm. It's our last day this trip. We had brought a change of clothes for William and the three of us went to the zoo. It's not far and we get in free because they have a membership.

Papa wanted to see the new tiger exhibition. William read everything there was about it.

Got a few good photo shots too.

Papa had promised. The ride. Actually William negotiated for a second ride after visiting the parakeet exhibition which Papa wanted to see.
VIDEO   (0:37)

We had a great time until it was bedtime. After all, it was a school night.

Friday we had to leave ... looking very much forward to seeing him again in July ... when it is vacation time!
